- Enter liquid cash you can spend (checking, savings you would use).
- Enter monthly burn, or income and expenses so we compute burn as expenses − income.
- Optionally model cutting a fixed amount per month to see extra months gained.
Formula: Months of runway = cash ÷ monthly burn. If burn ≤ 0, runway is effectively unlimited under this simple model.
Example
With $12,000 cash and $2,000 monthly burn, you have 6 months of runway. Cutting $500/mo raises runway to 8 months.
FAQ
Is burn the same as spending?
Burn is net cash leaving each month. If you earn $5,000 and spend $4,500, burn is $0 for this model (you are not drawing down cash). If you spend $5,500, burn is $500.
Should I include investment accounts?
Usually no for short-term runway. Count cash and near-cash you would actually use before selling long-term investments.
