50/30/20 Budget Calculator
Enter your take-home pay and get exact needs, wants, and savings targets. Adjust the splits if 50/30/20 is not your fit.
The 50/30/20 rule splits take-home pay into needs (50%), wants (30%), and savings or debt payoff (20%). Use it as a starting target, then adjust the percentages if your rent or debt load is higher.

- Enter your monthly take-home (after tax) income.
- We multiply by 0.50, 0.30, and 0.20 for needs, wants, and savings.
- Optionally change the three percentages. They must add up to 100.
Formula: Needs = income × 50%. Wants = income × 30%. Savings = income × 20%.
Example
On $4,000 take-home: $2,000 needs, $1,200 wants, $800 savings. If housing alone is $2,200, lower wants or raise the needs share until the plan fits.
FAQ
Is take-home or gross income the right input?
Use take-home (after tax). The rule is meant for money you can actually spend and save.
Where does debt payoff go?
Minimum debt payments are usually needs. Extra payments toward becoming debt-free fit in the savings bucket.
